For the purpose of using the Minnesota Unemployment Insurance (UI) online Self-Service System, an agent is any person or organization who is authorized to conduct UI business on behalf of one or more registered Minnesota employer(s).
An agent is given secure access to an employer’s online account by an authorized user of the UI employer account. Reference the Employer Self-Service System User Guide - Agent Authorization and User Roles, for step-by-step instuctions. To complete the role assignment process, an agent must provide his/her Minnesota UI Agent ID number to the employer/client. An agent receives a Minnesota UI Agent ID number by registering as an agent.
In most cases, an agent is also a registered Minnesota employer. In these instances, an agent would have 2 separate UI accounts and corresponding account numbers:
- an agent account with an 8-digit Minnesota UI Agent ID number for use when conducting business on behalf of others; and,
- a Minnesota UI employer account with an 8-digit employer account number for use as a Minnesota employer.
