Report a Change of Legal Entity Type

If you have a new Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) due to a change of legal entity type (example: sole proprietor to corporation) of your business, you must register a new employer account.

To report a change of legal entity type:

  1. Log in to your account at www.uimn.org
  2. On My Home Page, click Legal Business Changes.
  3. Click Report a Change of Legal Entity Type.

The next set of pages will take you through the new employer account registration process.

  4. When the Subject Employer Information page opens, answer Yes to the question “Did you acquire or merge with (acquire or combine with) any Part of an existing MN business, or do you have a new FEIN due to a change of legal entity type?”.
  5. Select Change of Legal Entity Type from the drop down menu, and then click Next.
  6. Complete the employer account registration, and then click Submit.
  7. On the Report a Change of Legal Entity page, complete the requested information about the previous entity.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Under Common Ownership select the appropriate option button.
  10. Click Next. The Determination of Covered Employer Status page opens.
