INCOME TAX WITHHOLDING

Unemployment benefits are taxable income under both federal and state law. Your total benefits paid are reported to both the Internal Revenue Service and to the Minnesota Department of Revenue. However, no income tax is withheld from your benefit payments unless you request it.

No later than January 31, you will be mailed an IRS Form 1099-G showing the total benefits paid to you for the prior year and all federal and state income taxes withheld. This form does not need to be attached to your income tax return. It will be sent to your last known address. You can view and print your 1099-G form online by logging in to your account at www.uimn.org

You can request, stop, or change your income tax withholding by:

  • logging in to your account online at www.uimn.org
  • calling the automated phone system.
