- Appeal
- The formal request by an applicant or employer to have a
determination reconsidered by an Unemployment Law Judge.
- Base Period
- The first four of the last five completed calendar
quarters prior to the applicant's benefit year. The wages
paid in the base period determine the weekly benefit
amount.
- Benefit Year
- The period of 52 calendar weeks beginning the date a benefit account is effective.
- Calendar Quarter
- The period of three consecutive calendar months ending on March 31, June 30, September 30, or December 31.
- Determination
- A decision made regarding an applicant's eligibility for
unemployment benefits. A determination of benefit account shows the
amount of money the applicant may be eligible to receive.
A decision about a job separation (quit, discharge,
refusal of reemployment, etc.) is known as a
determination of eligibility.
- Discharge
- To terminate an individual from employment. Discharges
can be due to employment misconduct or non-misconduct.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA)
- Section 407 of the
Disaster Relief Act of 1974 created a program for the
payment of unemployment assistance to individuals whose
unemployment is the direct result of a major disaster as
declared by the President of the United States.
- Extended Benefits
- During periods of high unemployment, extended benefits (extensions)
allow applicants to continue receiving unemployment benefit
payments after monies in the regular account have been exhausted.
At the present time there is no federal extension in Minnesota.
- Hearing
- A session in which testimony is taken from applicants and employers to consider an appeal of a decision
concerning benefits or to resolve a dispute of a material
fact between the employer and an applicant.
- Ineligible
- The failure to qualify for benefits due to being unable to work, unavailable for or not actively seeking suitable employment.
- Maximum Amount of Benefits
- The total amount of money an applicant can receive in the
benefit year. This figure is 26 times the weekly benefit
amount or one-third of the total wage credits the
applicant earned during the base period, whichever is
less.
- Overpayment
- Benefits incorrectly paid an applicant that must be repaid
- Partial Benefits
- If the applicant's gross earnings during a week are less
than the applicant's weekly benefit amount, the applicant
may be eligible to partial benefits. Partial payments are
usually paid when the applicant has only part-time work
of less than 32 hours per week.
- Quit
- An applicant-initiated separation from employment.
- Unemployment Law Judge
- An attorney who hears the applicant's or the employer's
appeal.
- Suitable Employment
- Employment in an applicant's labor market area that is
reasonably related to the applicant's qualifications.
- Trade Readjustment Act (TRA)
- An act which provides benefits to persons
affected by foreign imports.
- UCFE
- Unemployment benefits for former Federal Employees.
- UCX
- Unemployment benefits for Ex-Service Personnel.
- Unemployed
- An individual is unemployed in any week in which the
individual performs no service and/or with respect to
which no wages are payable to the individual. Also, an
individual is unemployed in any week of less than full-time work if the wages payable with respect to such week
are less than the individual's weekly benefit amount. An
individual is ineligible to receive benefits if the
individual is performing services 32 hours or more per
week in employment or self-employment regardless of the
amount of any earnings.
- Waiting Week
- The first week in your benefit year that you are eligible to receive benefits. The Waiting Week is never paid but must be served in order to receive payment for subsequent weeks.
- Weekly Benefit Amount
- The amount of money to which an applicant may be eligible
each week. The amount is based on the applicant's wages
paid during the base period.
- Week Ending Date
- The benefit week runs from Sunday through Saturday. The
week ending date is always a Saturday date.
