What are Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB)?

Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB) are benefits available after you have exhausted your federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC). The Federal-State Extended Benefits (EU) extends benefits for up to 13 more weeks.

Who is eligible for Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB)?

Eligible applicants are those who are unemployed (or hours have been significantly reduced) and have exhausted federal EUC benefits.

How do I know if I am eligible?

Eligible applicants who are close (within three weeks) to exhausting their federal EUC account will be mailed a letter notifying them of these extended benefits.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To be eligible for EUC (federal and state), the law requires that you:

• exhaust a state unemployment insurance account after March 29, 2009.
• have wages that exceed 40 times your weekly benefits amount in the base period.
• be unemployed or have your work hours significantly reduced, and;
• conduct and report an intensive work search each week.
• meet the eligibility requirements (able to work, available for work) required for regular unemployment benefits, and;
• not be receiving unemployment benefits from Canada, and;
• not be ineligible under any other provision of Minnesota unemployment law.

What are the 'intensive' work search requirements?

An intensive work search includes:

• Searching for work outside your normal occupation.
• Accepting work offered to you that you are able to perform.

How will I report my work search activities?

You will be asked questions about your work search when you make your weekly request for benefit payment (online and by phone).

What happens if I don’t meet the work search requirements?

Failure to look for work or refusing suitable work offered to you may disqualify you from receiving benefits.

How do I apply for Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB)?

No application is needed. Your Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB) will be added to your account the week following when you exhaust your federal EUC.

How much will I get in Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB)?

The weekly benefit amount of Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB) is the same as the weekly amount of your most recent regular unemployment benefit account. You will receive up to 13 weeks of benefits (your amount will vary based on your regular state unemployment benefit account).

How long are the Federal-State Extended Benefits (EB) available?

The availability of the program is determined by the state’s unemployment rate.
