What are EUC benefits?

EUC benefits are benefits that extend the number of weeks you can receive unemployment benefits.

Who is eligible for EUC benefits?

Eligible applicants are those who have either exhausted their regular state unemployment benefits or have an account that has reached its benefit year end and cannot establish a new regular benefit account.

How do I know if I am eligible?

Eligible applicants who are nearing their benefit year end or are close (within three weeks) to exhausting their regular state unemployment benefit account will be mailed a letter notifying them of how and when to apply.

If I am eligible for federal EUC benefits, can I also receive state EUC benefits?

No. The state EUC benefits are intended for those who are not eligible for the federal EUC benefits.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To be eligible for EUC (federal and state), the law requires that you:

  • exhaust your regular Minnesota unemployment benefits or your benefit year ends after April 30, 2007, and;
  • have no rights to regular or extended benefits under any state (including Minnesota) or federal UI program, and;
  • are unemployed or have your work hours significantly reduced, and;
  • meet the eligibility requirements (able to work, available for work, looking for work) required for regular unemployment benefits, and;
  • not be receiving unemployment benefits from Canada, and;
  • not be ineligible under any other provision of Minnesota unemployment law.

When should I apply for EUC benefits?

Apply the next business day after your regular state unemployment benefit account is at $0.

How do I apply for EUC benefits?

If you are still unemployed and have run out of regular state unemployment benefits (your account balance is $0), you can apply for EUC benefits online or using the automated phone system by selecting the option Apply for Benefits. The self-service system will guide you through the application process.

Detailed instructions are also mailed weekly to those who may be eligible to apply for EUC benefits.

How much will I get in EUC benefits?

The weekly benefit amount of EUC benefits (federal or state) is usually the same as the amount on your most recent regular unemployment benefit account. EUC benefits are paid in a progression of Tier One, Tier Two and Tier Three.

How are EUC benefits paid?

Payments are made electronically to the bank account associated with your most recent unemployment benefit account, or to the unemployment debit card you received for unemployment insurance.

Is there a deadline to be eligible for EUC?

Yes. To be eligible for EUC Tier One, you must exhaust regular state unemployment benefits on or before the week beginning March 28, 2010. To progress to the next tier of EUC benefits, you must exhaust benefits in a tier on or before the week beginning April 4, 2010 to be eligible for the next tier of EUC benefits.

How long is EUC available?

The last payable week for all tiers of:

  • state EUC is the week beginning June 27, 2010.
  • federal EUC is the week beginning August 29, 2010
