EUC benefits are benefits that extend the number of weeks you can receive unemployment benefits.
Who is eligible for EUC benefits?
Eligible applicants are those who have either exhausted their regular state unemployment benefits or have an account that has reached its benefit year end and can not establish a new regular benefit account.
How do I know if I am eligible?
Eligible applicants who are nearing their benefit year end or are close (within three weeks) to exhausting their regular state unemployment benefit account will be mailed a letter notifying them of how and when to apply.
If I am eligible for federal EUC benefits, can I also receive state EUC benefits?
No. The state EUC benefits are intended for those who are not eligible for the federal EUC benefits. You are only eligible to receive one or the other – not both.
What are the eligibility requirements?
To be eligible for EUC (federal and state), the law requires that you:
- exhaust your regular Minnesota unemployment benefits or your benefit year ends after April 30, 2007, and;
- have no rights to regular or extended benefits under any state (including Minnesota) or federal UI program, and;
- are unemployed or have your work hours significantly reduced, and;
- meet the eligibility requirements (able to work, available for work, looking for work) required for regular unemployment benefits, and;
- not be receiving unemployment benefits from Canada, and;
- not be ineligible under any other provision of Minnesota unemployment law.
When should I apply for EUC benefits?
Apply the next business day after your regular unemployment benefit account is at $0.
How do I apply for EUC benefits?
If you are still unemployed and have run out of regular unemployment benefits (your account balance is $0), you can apply for EUC benefits online or using the automated phone system by selecting the option Apply for Benefits. The self-service system will guide you through the application process.
Detailed instructions are also mailed weekly to those who may be eligible to apply for EUC benefits.
How much will I get in EUC benefits?
The weekly benefit amount of EUC benefits (federal or state) is usually the same as the amount on your most recent regular unemployment benefit account. You will receive up to 20 weeks of benefits (your amount will vary based on your regular state unemployment benefit account).
How are EUC benefits paid?
Payments are made electronically to the bank account associated with your most recent unemployment benefit account, or to the unemployment debit card you received for unemployment insurance.
How long are EUC benefits available?
The last week to apply for EUC benefits is the week of December 20-26, 2009. EUC benefits can be paid until the end of May 2010.
